Observer - Ride Along Program


Jefferson Hills EMS offers an Observer Program. This program allows the participant an opportunity to learn more about the exciting world of pre-hospital emergency care. If you would like to learn more about EMS, we invite you to participate in a ride-along day at Jefferson Hills EMS. You will be able to observe paramedics and EMT’s in action, learn about the equipment on the ambulance, and discover what daily life is like inside an EMS station.

Jefferson Hills EMS strives to provide quality educational opportunities that will further the mission of the service. In an effort to promote community-based support, strengthen interagency alliances, and nurture a solid recruiting base, to allow members of the community to observe Jefferson Hills EMS staff and volunteers providing patient care and gain valuable insight into the services provided to area residents. Participants in the Ride-Along program will experience, first hand, the satisfaction in helping their neighbors during an emergency.



The Observer Program provides a quality educational experience for the participant. Candidates for the program should at a minimum meet one of the following criteria:

Have an interest in emergency medical services as a:

  • Career

  • Educational opportunity


  • Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Participants between the ages of 16-18, MUST submit a completed and signed wavier form by their Legal Guardian.

  • Ride time is prohibited from the hours of 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

  • To enhance the ride-along learning experience, observers shall be initially assigned to a Supervisor vehicle. At the discretion of the supervisor, riders may be granted temporary assignment to an operational ambulance for clinical observation.

  • At no time shall a participant in the Observer Program be allowed to participate in patient care and treatment. The participants are there strictly as observers and are not expected, compelled or required to assist in patient care under any circumstances.


All candidates for the Observer Program shall be coordinated through the Jefferson Hills Area Ambulance Supervisory staff or the Volunteer Medical Coordinator.

Before being able to ride along on an ambulance, you will be given a safety briefing, a tour and overview of the vehicle and equipment.  You will also be asked to complete some paperwork.  To participate in a ride-along, you must be at least 16 years old.  Those under age 18 must have a parent or guardian’s signed permission.
